The Tale of the Dancing Bear

Once again, Hiro was up for a boring and rather embarrassing job. Not that he was embarrassed per se. He didn't care, really. But it was hot, stuffy and, yes, boring. Being inside a bear costume and waving at people to get their attraction was certainly not his favourite job but it was the one he was doing right now anyway. That toy store really wanted people to see their new collection. It was really not interesting though. He couldn't talk so all he could do was wave at people and point at the shop. How was that good publicity, really? It was why, after a while, he decided to dance too. At first, it was nothing much, He bent down and rocked left to right, moving his hands in a rolling motion. Already, it attracted a bit more attention. Enough for him to go further and start dancing. He couldn't do exactly like normal. He was not as free of his movement in this suit. He was getting pretty hot in there too, sweating, which made him think that the next poor guy forced into his costume will not like him for that, but he seriously didn't care. It was funnier that way, and made the whole thing easier to deal with. He went to a young girl who was looking at his dance with her parents and pulled her hand with his paw - which really was just an extension of the arm with nothing more. He made her swirl, liking how brightly she smiled. This was definitely better than just wave at passersby to get them to visit the shop. MADE BY ★MEULK

Meg was out shopping for fabric for her newest clothes. She’d have a choreography to work on and to be ready for her upcoming competition. It also meant having the best oufit to work with. She knew a few friends who could work her an outfit that would be perfect for her figure and the dance shew as having so she was excited about it. All she had to buy was the fabric and the necessairy items that were going to be needed for the dress.
When that was done, she was ready to head home and back to the studio where she could continue her training. It was important to her. She wanted to have a name like her sister but be different to her. They had their own style and she had a love for dance, it was her passion and taking part of that dancing group that this Hiro showed her the other day had showed her that she could incorporate various styles in her dancing. She even considered adjusting her choreography at one point.
As she thought of it, she found a dancing bear who was doing publicity for a shop in a different way and one that seemed to work well. She smiled as she looked at the mascot doing its work. She always admired people who enjoyed dancing and this bear seemed to be one of those.

While Hiro danced with the girl, he didn't pay too much attention to the rest of the crowd. Only, maybe, her parents, to make sure they were fine with what was going on and wouldn't start thinking he meant to do something to their daughter. He didn't know if they planned on going to the shop once he directed them towards it or simply walk away now that this was done. He did his job, people stopped to look around. As for the rest, the owner had to hope his windows were appealing enough for them to enter the shop after having fun with the mascot. It's only after he was done with the family that he looked around the small crowd that had gathered. You'd think they never saw a street performer dressed as a teddy bear before. It was then that he saw her. He recognized Megan easily, although he took a moment just to be sure. But it was her indeed, smiling brightly at the show he just gave them. He bounced towards her and moved to take her hand. Not that he could really take her hand though, with the arms he had, but it was clear what his intention was. She was the new target of his and with some people not having walked away just yet, she might feel a little trapped to come with him. He wanted to take the head off and let her know who it was, but he supposed it may not be the best thing to do with children around. You had to keep the magic going for them. But perhaps he could say a thing or two that would give her a hint. But first, he thought about having some fun at her expense and dance with her. His movements may be limited, but he could still do a thing or two. MADE BY ★MEULK

Megan didn’t think that she stood out in a crowd or couldn’t imagine that she knew the person behind the teddy bear. She thought they had a great idea, to have them dancing around like that and certainly funnier than all of those mascots who only stood there and waved at everyone to come to the shop. He certainly seemed to enjoy his job and she appreciated that about them. She said his because mostly guys were hidden behind a huge costume and it was a rarity to see a female dressed like that.
She didn’t expect the bear to invite her for a dance but she simply laughed and decided to play along. She was curious to see what they got and not afraid to show off her skills in front of other people. She had enjoyed her time at Hiroto’s dance floor the other day and started thinking that she could go back there someday just to have fun with everyone else and to show them her moves in exchange they’d show her theirs.
She didn’t mind when the bear had targeted her as a new ‘victim’. She’d gladly have a dance or two with someone fun.

Hiroto did wonder for a second if his boss was going to whine about him dancing like that. He was not a mascot to entertain people, he was here to get their attention and make them visit the shop. At the same time, he never would visit a shop because some guy was waving at it in a silly costume and he couldn’t just stand there and wave at people. He might look indifferent a lot with his expression but he was not and even if he didn’t really care about this job he was not going to be intentionally bad at it. Plus, it would be so boring if he did nothing. He didn’t expect to see Megan. While he knew there could be a mild possibility to run into someone he knew, he still didn’t expect it, let alone to be her. He noticed she had bags but they didn’t look too heavy so he dared dragging her. Besides, what else could he do to get her attention? Sure, he could talk, but he preferred to be a dancing bear rather than a talking one. He purposefully made break dance moves while waiting for her to copy them. Sure, it was easier on her part, she didn’t have a big costume slowing her movements. He didn’t know how else to make her understand it was him. And even if she found out it was, then what? Already the last time he figured it would be the last time they’d meet. He didn’t know what to say to get her attention but he felt like he should, if only for a brief hello. It would be too weird if they were to meet again and he had to admit he was the bear she danced with. “You should get in the shop, Meg,” he said, as he remembered her name. She might wonder who it was, which would be enough to have her stay until he was done. It shouldn’t take long for him to get a break anyway and he could pull that head off. MADE BY ★MEULK

Meg didn’t expect to be dragged like this into a little dance session. She didn’t mind, and always had fun while doing so even though she was a professional. She always enjoyed letting loose when she could and thanks to Hiroto’s studio, she was slowly starting to find her passion for dancing back. She had lost it through the billion of practices she had done for the competition with her partner.
She copied him as he moved and laughed a bit as the teddy bear challenged her. She wasn’t against having a good time even if it meant showing off around people. The bags were slightly in the way but didn’t bother her too much and she was able to copy the style even if her specialty was Latin dancing.
She then startled a little when she heard the bear talking to her, and obviously knew of her name. She gave it a curious look as she stopped dancing with him and nodded before bowing lightly at the crowd and smiling at them. They seemed to have enjoyed it and she had too. She then went into the shop to look at the things they were selling. The voice sounded familiar so she really wanted to know who was behind the bear.

Of course, the dance was nothing to what they could really do. At the same time, Hiroto knew she was dancing mostly with a partner but never did that with her, so he didn't exactly how they worked together. The fact they did very different styles didn't help. That dance was simple enough though. It was a little annoying not being able to move properly because of the costume but Megan was smiling brightly while playing along and it affected him as well, not minding so much the sweat and heat anymore. Hiroto couldn't talk too much since it was hard to do so in the costume. It was not made to talk, the shop's owner clearly didn't care about you calling out potential customers, the look was enough. He thanked the crowd now that the show was over. He hoped Megan would follow him. It was a little hard to see but by turning around he could see she entered the shop. Glad of it, he simply walked towards the back. He was not supposed to take people in the personnel's quarters but he didn't really care. He doubted she wanted to buy something anyway. And he couldn't just take his head off in front of the kids in the store. He would have to wait for her to get in to take the bear's head off and show her who just danced with her. Normally, he wouldn't care, but he thought it was nicer to tell her she danced with someone she knew. It was not like he could call her to tell her after his work was over. MADE BY ★MEULK

Meg had enjoyed doing that little show off with the teddy bear that apparently knew her. She tried to remember the voice even if it sounded indeed familiar. It had to be someone she knew so she was intrigued to see who was behind the costume! She had a good time dancing with him and he obviously knew some moves too. He ought to be another dancer and she didn’t see how she wouldn’t recognize him. She wondered about if it was to talk to her that he had asked her to come to the shop and not just to sell her stuff by knowing her name. It’d be too weird.
She then noticed that he was expecting her to follow him to the back store and she nodded, following him in silence. She couldn’t blame him for not wanting to ruin the magic of the dancing bear. The thought made her smile a bit and she didn’t focus on the fact that she shouldn’t have followed him there. It’s not like he seemed to mind anyways…not that she could read a bear’s costume in the first place.

Hiroto could have told her who he was but he didn't think Teddy was supposed to have a name or hint to having a man inside the costume. It was why he didn't say more than that to Megan. Well that and he was getting a little sweaty and out of breath. It was really stuffy in that costume, he could use a little break to breathe some fresh air. Luckily for her, he was not trying to have her buy stuff. It was not as though he was paid for every person buying something in the store. He'd never do this job otherwise. He was not for that sort of thing. He was probably the least materialistic person in town himself. There was no one in ther personnel's 'office' to say she shouldn't be here. Again, she was following him somewhere she maybe shouldn't have. The thought amused him a little. The door closed, he took the head off now that no kid could see him. He took a deep a loud breath before pushing away some of his hair on his face. He should probably say something so he looked at her and only after a little moment, he said. "Hello."MADE BY ★MEULK

As Meg followed the teddy bear she tried to figure out who could be behind the mask. She didn’t remember anyone close to her telling her that they were doing that sort of job. It was why it intrigued her. Sure, he ought to be a dancer but there were a lot of dancers in Los Angeles. Could he be one of the students who happened to be at her sister’s studio? It was possible, but the voice certainly didn’t sound that familiar.
She couldn’t blame him for leading her towards the personnel’s office and then looked at him surprised when he removed his head and she saw Hiro, the one she had seen performing in the streets. Now that was a surprise! Mostly because she didn’t think he’d be the kind of person to come and talk to her because he had met her once. He seemed like a solitary guy and she would’ve respected that too.
She tried to process the thought without looking too slow as she replied to him. “Woah, hi! I didn’t expect to see you there.” She admitted. Sure, she would’ve been surprised with anyone who was wearing this but it was just so strange to see Hiro and for him to talk to her in the first place!

Hiro did all sorts of jobs. Most of the time, he was hired when a shop needed an extra hand. If he couldn't get work that way, he could still do street performances or work in warehouses to carry all sorts of boxes around to be shipped in various stores around the city. He didn't tell his close friends about what he was doing, unless they asked where he could be found lately, so of course he didn't bother telling Megan of this. It was not like they met after that one time. He didn't even leave her his phone number, so how could she contact him and find out? He was not on social media to post that sort of thing after all. He expected her surprise, even if he thought she might not recognize him. She might have liked his dance style or the studio he showed her but he didn't think he was the kind to leave an impression on people. He was forced to admit she recognized him though, judging by the look of surprise on her face. Somehow, it pleased him, if only a little. She was right though that he was a solitary person. He however could not pass the chance to dance with her and thought he needed to tell her it was him after that. "I work here for now," he explained although that seemed pretty obvious, considering that he had been dancing in front of the shop dressed as a bear and that the owner did not try to kick him out. "I took the opportunity when I saw you, since you are a dancer too." It was for that explanation after all that he brought her here, he might as well tell her. MADE BY ★MEULK

Meg was happy to find a familiar face, let along Hiro because she didn’t think that she would meet him again. Not when he was a street performer. She knew that people like him didn’t have a fixed home but she had to admit that she had been tempted to hit his studio once in a while to have fun with the people. Most of them were colored and she knew that she was the one in minority when she went there but she liked that they accepted her right away when she showed her skills.
“Ah, I see.” She said, not asking for more explanation. He was allowed to have jobs here and there. She, on the other hand, was working at her sister’s studio and aimed to the competition she had in a few months. It was getting closer and closer and she had a good dance with her partner. Everything was going well but she did miss dancing like that, without counting the number of steps she was doing. There was a lot of technique but she also tended to dance more freely than usual dancers which most of the time was frowned upon in straight competitions.
“It makes sense, I’m happy you picked me, I had fun.” She said to him.

It was a little strange to see Megan. Well, maybe not. She fit the clients you'd expect around these parts. Just like he supposed he could fit only as one of the minimum wage emplyees of the place. He didn't care though. Hiro knew he might not have much but he was also content with it. He did not have the ambition of getting lots of money, it was not all that important to him. Still, meeting Megan again, speaking to her, this was strange. He had no idea whether she showed up at his 'studio' again or not. If she did, no one told him, and he figured some of them would have, at least the youngest ones of the bunch. She did not question his job. He couldn't say whether he was happy or not of it, it seemed not to affect him. He was grateful she was not asking if she liked it or enjoyed playing the mascot. If he had to dress up to entertain, he would hope he wouldn't have to share some stuffy suit with other, smoking, people. He nodded as she seemed to understand, at least why he picked her. He coudld have picked anyone else, it was not like he made very difficult dance moves, but he could not resist the opportunity. He forgot to mention that though. "I thought I should tell you, in case." Again, Hiro was not saying enough. He should have added 'in case we meet again at the studio or the streets and I would tell you I saw you and you weren't aware it was me'. But Hiro always seemed unable to fully say out loud what he was thinking. MADE BY ★MEULK

Meg never looked down on people’s jobs or the situation they were in their lives. Everyone had their story to tell and she thought that it was only more fascinating to figure them out as she spent time with the said people. It was the same for Hiro; she wouldn’t make fun of him because it was some of his jobs. She couldn’t blame him; he needed money more than she did and while she wasn’t poor, that didn’t mean she didn’t know the value of hard work. The dancing field was a very competitive one and she had yet found her mark here. For now, working at her sister’s studio was fine but she wanted improvement for her future. She wasn’t even sure if she’d be a teacher still after that.
She smiled and nodded back at him. Well, that was a nice gesture; she thought that he was more of the awkward and cold type but he proved her wrong since he was the one who said that he wanted to talk to her. It pleased her and she tried to find a subject of conversation so it wouldn’t be too weird for them to talk to each other in such a place.
“It’s nice that you did.” She added as she looked at him. “Are you planning to go back to your studio? I think I’ll need some time here before the competition, it will calm my nerves.” She said with a smile.

Hiro did lack of ambition, that much was a fact. He was content with being but a street performer and getting by with some odd jobs whenever he got one. He was not aspiring to open his own studio or make choreographies for music videos or appear in dancing competitions. If you pushed him in that direction, he could end up doing it, but he saw little to no reason to do it on his own. He thought Megan was not like that however. She had to be more like what most people were like, with goals that exceeded simply living by. He was not sure what her dreams could be though. Hiro had stopped trying to understand what people could think after being pushed around in yet another foster home. He found out it was easier not to assume anything and care only about yourself until they told you exactly what it was they wanted. Sure, they would still complain, but at least you didn’t have to justify yourself by saying you thought they’d like it. She mentioned his ‘studio’. “After work, maybe. You went there since last time?” She talked of competition. He figured she meant a dancing one but he did not ask her. He was a bit surprised it would ‘calm’ her as she claimed. At the same time, he knew many of the ones dancing in that street did so to get something to do that did not imply some gang activity. “You can’t calm down in yours?” He didn’t mean she couldn’t come to his place if she wanted to, he just knew she worked in a dance studio and thought there was nothing she could do at his that she couldn’t at hers. But maybe she couldn’t. He had no idea how actual dancing studios worked like. MADE BY ★MEULK
